OK, it's kind of crazy over here. Warning, Sandra, warning!!! Things in hell (otherwise known as my workplace) have turned dark and the amount of calls are pouring in all week, for some cosmic reason everybody in their mothers decided to call the call center and it's not raining but pouring the amount of crazy calls that I get day to day, hardly anytime for a little "me" time when I get to talk about the stuff that has happened lately and the stuff that I've watched (like "Terminator Salvation" or "Star Trek" and Angels and Demons among other great films, and pretty soon Sam, Dena a.k.a. Scarlett Angel, Dean and Dennis would all get together and watch "Drag Me To Hell" which promises to be really good and at its worst it will be a good entry in my blog (there's always a bright side to everything!!).
However, in this entry of my blog I must comment how much I've enjoyed watching the People's Diva as she calls herself: Bette Davis and her show called "The Showgirl Must Go On" which is currently playing at the Ceasar's Palace in Las Vegas. I had only heard of her as a singer more than an actress who decided to perform a variety show in Vegas but there's a lot of things I realized she did as well. Her best songs are of course "The Rose" and "Wind Beneath My Wings" (which I mistakenly called the "Hero" song the other day but I almost got slapped across my face when I heard it actually was called Wind Beneath My Wings, so soooorrryyy GOSH!! LOL) but there was just so much more that this tiny Jewish entertainer had in store for her audience. The most obvious thing is how funny this lady really is, even cursing she's still very classy and a real People's Diva indeed. Luckily, I wasn't expecting anything special having watched O at Bellaggio he night before and to me that would have been the highlight of this Vegas trip (besides the wonderful company I had, of course, Horse!) but this gal really left me laughing and rolling all the way through and when she wasn't cracking some really nice jokes then she was lending her voice (and oh, darling what a voice she has!) to some of her most memorable songs I had always heard but never paid attention to until tonight.
The Showgirl Must Go On has so many good moments in there that are countless to mention but there is a hilarious sequence in which Bette is actually a Mermaid in wheels, along with her "Ceasar Salad Girls" who was very Vegas-y and just what you'd expect to see in a truly first class Vegas Showgirl show. There were also 3 black backup singers who were just phenomenal while Bette Midler was preparing for her next number.
At one point of the Showgirl Must Go On, Bette just crumbled to the floor begging for mercy and wondering how other people perform day in and day out in Vegas without a moment's rest, she was asking Donnie And Marie (who have a show across the street at Flamingo's) to come over and help her finish the show, or even Celine Dion to come back and finish her performance: "Come on, Celine, everything's forgiven!! Come and help me!!, she begged as she was literally rolling around the stage while the audience was laughing hysterically.
The one thing I will cherish is how genuine she seems to be on stage, just as if you had known her all along and she's invited to her own home and dying to entertain you, no non-sense and pretentious but just funny, honest and grateful for a career that have span decades when she appeared in the Sonny and Cher show, to when she first appeared in The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, to the movies she starred in (none of which I had seen, by the way, except for Hocus Pocus which really doesn't count. I know: Shame on me!!) she has grown as a true performer and an entrepreneur like noone other, one that's got so much charisma to throw around and is appreciative of her audience. That's a true Diva right there, one that gives her all to the audience and gets love in return.
I, for one, will always remember this show very fondly and wish there were more wonderful shows like hers. By far the most fun I've had in Vegas since Beatles' Love or Zumanity, two thumbs up way up for Bette.
The Showgirl Must Go On!!! Go People's Diva, go!!
