I just couldn't write anymore that first night that I came back from Vegas, I was exhausted and it was way past my bedtime, I don't know how I'm gonna go back to work after my sleeping habits have been very irregular lately this week.
So the next thing we did after arriving at Vegas was to head out and, after waking everybody up, went to buy some tickets for a Vegas show, which I just HAD to do, that's my new thing now, either catch a Vegas show, or Broadway show whenever I'm in New York and even when I'm not, lile when the musicals come to town like Mamma Mia in Pasadena, Lion King or Wicked in Pantages Theatre in Hollywood or any other venue. There were playing Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia! over in Vegas but what I really wanted to see was a Cirque Du Soleil show which are always amazing. Last times we came to Vegas we had seen La Reve playing at the Wyatt Hotel, which was truly a work of art in water and also we caught Zumanity which is still playing over New York, New York casino which was pretty funny and had very sensual moments that I always remember fondly (Especially that Cuban stripper at the end was a nice sight to catch, I can tell you that).
So I was looking throuh this magazine they give you at the hotel as soon as you check in called Las Vegas Magazine and there was this ad about getting tickets to Vegas shows and dinners at a discounted price, up to 50% off, it's called TIX4TONIGHT and if you click on the link for it you'll see their 5 different locations all over the strip and you can get great discounts for most all Vegas shows and even for dinners as well. You just gotta get there as soon as they're opening which is 10a.m. although they recommend you get there at 9:30 since they start making a big line and they start posting the shows on these different screens so you have an idea of which shows you want to see. I saw all the shows posted there but it was of course wednesday so it's probably different during the weekends but it's still a good way to save some moolah and get your show tickets a little bit in advance. They actually give you these vouchers which you take to the show's box office and then you get the actual tickets, but they're legit, we got 30% off our tickets to see which is playing at MGM Hotel.
I was pretty confident we were going to be treated to a show like no other show we've seen before, every time Jorge and I go to see a Cirque Du Soleil show we are very pleased, almost all the time. Almost...
The problem with this production is that there's a lot of storytelling and the first hour is spent telling this story about an ancient civilization and two siblings, an Archer's daughter who falls in love with one of the twins, there's a Court Jester and a funny lady named the Nursemaid from an Empire which get separated during a fight scene after they all embark on this ship and head out to sea, which is the most amazing scene I've ever seen, this boat weighs apparently 1800 pounds and it rocks back and forth by the acrobats on board, it's very amazing what those acrobats can do and besides that there's a big storm that makes the ship sink, you could even see the whole stage filling up with (fake) water up until everyone is supposedly underwater, then one by one the different characters appear on the stage from the ceiling down (suspended by wires, of course), descending as if floating towards the abyss of the sea. They even create bubbles as if they were really underwater, it was a very intricate trick which I'm still marvelling about.
However, after that the different characters end up in different places, like on a deserted beach with weird, giant sea creatures (actually they're puppets), others are trapped by the evil doers and are captive in this baskets, others like the Nursemaid get acquainted with these nomads in a Himalayan mountain full of ice in another of the most impressive puppetry I have never seen, they convert this tent into a flying aparatus, as in the shape of an eagle, which flies above the audience until they land safely back on solid ground. There's many good scenes and the music is very soothing, as you know it's always live music so that makes the show a whole different level of entertainment.
I guess the problem is that they spent an awful lot of time following each character, and they spend way too much time dancing, or playing with shadows (if you can believe that, actually was kind of cute and very unique, but Cirque Du Soleil has done much better than that), or lost in a forest with a giant snake. I believe that it was a fine production had we known a littlw bit of the story going in the theatre, besides we had just eaten so much at the buffet that I was literally falling asleep and with the music so soothing (each seat has speakers with behing your head so you could hear from any point in the theatre), Jorge and I just battled to remain awake. At the end of the show the acrobats do show some huevos by climbing on the Wheel of Death which is similar to the one they were showing on Celebrity Circus in which Antonio Sabato Jr. won the competition. There were a couple of times that I thought they were going to trip and fall off the stage, they were going too fast and that brought my full-on attention. Then in the finale they had fireworks, lots of them, they were so bright I had to shut my eyes for a second, but by that time I had fallen asleep in a couple of last scenes so I can't really say what had happened. So it was partly my fault for being just so exhausted about having been all afternoon by the beach/pool for about 4 hours, plus all that walking and finally the buffet that really did me in, I was begging for the show to be over as soon as it began, my other friends loved it though, so I can't really say everyone hated it, just Jorge and me. It is however a very nice production, mostly for families, I still liked Zumanity a lot more since it was more geared to adults and it kept getting better and better, no storytelling there but who really needs stories when you have a topless asian acrobats playing in the water, a Drag Queen hosting the show, an orgy in which the audience could participate, lots of dildos and a Cuban stripper??? That's right, that's exactly MY type of show!!!
