Last night I almost gave up. We had seen a few movies this week and I really didn't feel like blogging about each one of them since they weren't even worth mentioning like Enchanted for obvious reasons, or 30 Days of Night starring Josh Harnett who is still looking good, then there was No Country For Old Men which was really weird but still disappointing to me, although I still love Javier Bardem, he's the greatest actor to come in a very long time. I even went to see Journey To The Center Of The Earth in 3D which was a riot. Never been to a full feature length movie in 3D, and it will probably be the last, I mean everything looked so cheesy and fake (of course the T-Rex or the prehistoric piranhas were fake, but still they looked even cheesier with the 3D glasses. Even Brendan Fraser looked fake. However, it was kinda fun to watch and get away from home for one night, I actually caught it in Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, which has changed so much recently, it's incredible, there are so many new shops, stores, clubs, restaurants, Kodak Theatre, the new Chinese Theatre which is still there, even El Capitan looked better.
I was more impressed with the Metro, and the people in the Metro. There's such a wide varieties of weirdos out there, it's just scary, especially when you take the Metro that late at night, but it's better here since there's free parking and it's just more convenient than trying to park around Hollywood which is always a nightmare, besides it's always exciting to see what's going on in the Metro, it's just so fun and reminds me of when I rode the Metro in New York, Madrid or Rome, you see all kinds of people there.
Luckily last night I caught a good movie on cable (What??) I know it sounds strange but I found one good thing to watch, it was The Invasion starring Nicole Kidman who's so gorgeous as always, Daniel Craig from the new Bond movies and the bad guy here is Jeremy Northam who plays Nicole's ex-husband who first becomes infected by the alien virus which infects everyone and transforms them into alien entities with no soul (AHHHHH, oh wait that's not very scary nowadays, right??) and it's of course based on the previous Invasion of The Body Snatchers movies, there were two previous ones the 1956 original which was awesome and the 1978 which I clearly remember, in this one the aliens opened their mouth and let out a scream so disturbing and scary that I could still remember it until this day.
This new version though is much more modern, as every movie is of course, in a world that has evolved in technology and the cell phone era (in this movie Nicole Kidman's son keeps texting her and sending her videos saying Hello, Mom, I Love and ultimately asking for help) so everything now is kind of different. I believe they got me a little scared when along comes a patient to see Nicole's practice (she's a psychologist) who you probably remember this woman from The Witches Of Eastwick as the delusional crazy wife who starts burfing all over her home until the husband gets so tired he decides to end her sorry little life, it's the most funny scene from that movie, remember that lady?? So anyways, in this movie she comes along and starts describing to Nicole that her husband is no longer her husband and starts telling her how she felt after she kissed him, she felt she was kissing a stranger and apparently all dogs can sense this alien presence and start attacking these aliens. The lady then describes how her husband took their dog by the head... then she heard her dog's head snap... but then her husband didn't even react or gave it any thought and took the dog's body outside and dumped it in the trash. The horror in the lady's face when she was telling this story is so real, you just don't feel comfortable anymore and even without witnessing the scene, you could just imagine how terrible that must have been.
Nicole starts witnessing some strange behavior herself when she goes to take her son to visit her ex-husband who has never been around to see his son in years but all of a sudden he's interested in seeing him, but of course you and I now know that he's also one of them who has converted over to this alien entity that wants to take over the world one person at a time. In another scene her ex-husband is giving a speech as to how this new vaccine will cure everyone's "flu" symptoms which turns out to be a way to widespread the virus to more people more quickly and other aliens who are pouring out the coffee for the people in the conference starts vomiting this green substance into the coffee's pots. At that moment I felt like throwing up what I just ate, and Jorge just started laughing hysterically. Yeah, I thought the same thing, too, he's so weird... Could he be one of them too??
The problem is that almost overnight everyone has come in close contact with the infected and have become zombie-like, noone talks to anyone and everyone looks around suspiciously, as if waiting for someone to just scream or show emotion to quickly subdue them too. The problem now begins when Nicole Kidman realizes her son is in danger and she must go out and rescue him from these evil, soulless people who claim is gonna be so much easy if you just go to sleep, which is when they really get you. She must show no emotion even when she sees people jumping off buildings or people just asking for help but the moment you try to help them they're overtaking by police force or by regular citizens. Suddenly you realize you can really trust noone, everyone becomes a suspect and you don't know how she's going to be able to locate her son.
The ending is somewhat stupid (although I don't want to spoil it for you) but there's a nice climax when Nicole & Son are being chased by these entities, and then she gets into a car crash in which she supposedly had injured during production, I'm not sure if that's the scene that made it in the movie but it looks all too real for me, but you need to watch this movie, it's really tense and doesn't let you down. I hope they made more horror movies that truly spook you like this one, it's much better when you don't know who the bad characters are, and everywhere you turn there's danger.
So lock all your doors, keep your dog away from the aliens and don't accept coffee from strangers!! Avoid Starbucks at all costs!! Mayday, mayday!!
